Planning the Perfect Na Pali Coast Day Trip by Car
The Na Pali Coast — 17 miles of emerald cliffs, hidden sea caves, and waterfalls cascading 4,000 feet into the Pacific. While boat and helicopter tours offer incredible views, many of the best experiences start with a drive.
The Kalalau Trail (Starting Point)
Drive to Ke'e Beach at the end of Highway 560 (Kuhio Highway). This is the trailhead for the famous Kalalau Trail. Even if you only hike the first 2 miles to Hanakapi'ai Beach, the views are world-class.
Important: You need a parking reservation through the Hawaii DLNR website. Book weeks in advance during peak season.
Waimea Canyon
Often called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," this 14-mile-long canyon is 3,600 feet deep and painted in reds, greens, and browns. Drive up Waimea Canyon Drive (Highway 550) with stops at:
- Waimea Canyon Lookout (mile 10)
- Pu'u Hinahina Lookout
- Kalalau Lookout (the grand finale with Na Pali views)
Best Itinerary
Morning: Hike Hanakapi'ai from Ke'e Beach (4 miles round trip, ~3 hours)
Afternoon: Drive to Waimea Canyon for the overlooks
Sunset: End at Polihale State Park on the west side — the longest beach in Hawaii with no one around
Vehicle Tips
A regular SUV handles all the paved roads fine. For Polihale State Park, you'll want a vehicle with decent clearance — the 5-mile dirt access road can be rough, especially after rain.
