Papakolea Green Sand Beach
~2.5 hr from Kona (includes 2.5 mi hike)BeachHikeScenic
One of only four green sand beaches in the world, this crescent of olive-green sand sits inside a cinder cone crater at the southernmost tip of the Big Island. The unusual color comes from olivine crystals eroded from the surrounding lava formations. Reaching it requires a 2.5-mile each-way hike from the South Point road or a bumpy off-road shuttle ride.
Tip: The hike is along a coastal cliff track — bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and sturdy shoes. The shuttle trucks charge a fee and are not required, but they save time. Swimming is possible in calm conditions.
