Maui sits in the middle of the humpback whale breeding grounds, and from December through April the waters come alive with breaching, tail-slapping, and spy-hopping whales. Boats depart from Lahaina and Maalaea harbors for 2-hour tours that often encounter pods within minutes of leaving shore.
Tip: January through March is peak season. Morning trips have calmer seas. The Pacific Whale Foundation offers excellent naturalist-led tours.
